EMELLE JGR BEGINNINGS

In September of 1977, in Birmingham, AL, the first Jones, Giles, Robinson (JGR) family reunion was held to commemorate the Robinson Riot that occurred on July 4, 1930.  Afterwards, family members hosted family reunions each year on the second weekend in July. The Jones Giles and Robinson reunion has allowed the family to re-unite in many cities including Boston, MA, Brooklyn, NY, Chicago, IL, Cincinnati, OH, and Nashville, TN.

The history of our family's past has been passed down from generation to generation thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Nat Jones’ contributions. They loved their community and resided in the same location since their birth. They were farmers and they plowed the fields of Emelle; a place that will forever be home for our family.  The Jones were in attendance at the first family reunion in Birmingham, AL, however, as they grew older, they were unable to travel the distance as the family re-united in various states.  During this time, Mr. Jones found the need to pass the torch to someone he knew would honor his wishes to continue telling the family story; Mr. Austin Brooks Robinson.

 In 1998, Mr. Austin Brooks Robinson had a meeting with Mr. Jones. During this meeting Mr. Robinson was able to see the hardship that the older members were starting to experience with carrying on the family affair.  Mr. Robinson then organized a family meeting on April 24, 1999 to discuss the options of having a JGR Family Day in the heart of Emelle, AL. At this meeting, Mr. Austin Brooks Robinson was selected as the President/Chairperson for the  Emelle JGR family event. The committee also voted to host an annual family day to occur each year on Easter weekend. The first  Emelle JGR Family Fun Day was held on April 2-3, 1997. Family joined together for a Friday picnic and a Saturday banquet at Emelle City Hall. In 2001 the committee decided to cancel the banquet and resume with the picnic yearly.
 
Along with Mr. and Mrs. Austin Brooks Robinson and other dedicated family members, we  celebrated the 20th  Emelle  JGR Family Fun Day on April 15, 2017.
